It was a quiet car ride back, but the air hummed, bright and brittle with anticipation.

“You want to ask me about faith,” Remy said to Caroline.

She bit her lip, and nodded.

“You have questions about faith.”

Caroline gave her a rueful smile. “I was raised in an Evangelical Christian household. My coming out as a lesbian… did not go well with my family, nor my church community.”

It was very quiet for a very long time.

Eventually, Remy said, “Love is all that matters.”

“Is that the official word of the Lord?” Caroline asked. It was scornful, but there was a pleading note to it.

Remy shook her head. “Much as with the Bible, the word of the Lord has been spoken, but there have been many different interpretations. It happens to the tongue of humans, and to the tongue of angels as well. I do not believe love can be wrong. My adoration for the female human is not what had me cast out of Heaven.”

“Angels can be gay?” Caroline blurted out.

“It is a bit more nuanced than that.”

“But that’s sort of the gist of it?”

Remy considered how to best phrase it. “Angels can feel any range of adoration or attraction for any given human being. And I do find myself attracted more towards women.” Another prolonged silence, and then Remy continued, “Adoration, attraction, affection, love… I do not see how that can be wrong.”

There was a happy, hopeful glow around Caroline, but she did not comment.

The rest of the ride was silent, and Remy took her place on the couch and went back to sleep.
